The Battle of Long Tan
Memorial Print
The Battle of Long Tan (18
August 1966) was fought between the Australian Army and Viet Cong forces in a
rubber plantation near the village of Long Tan, about 27 kilometres (17 mi)
north east of Vung Tau, South Vietnam. The action occurred when D Company of the
6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (6 RAR), part of the 1st Australian
Task Force (1 ATF), encountered the Viet Cong 275th Regiment and elements of the
D445 Local Forces Battalion. D Company was supported by other Australian units,
as well as New Zealand and United States artillery.

HMAS Sydney II
HMAS
Sydney II named for the Australian city of
Sydney, was one of three Modified Leander class light
cruisers operated by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).
Ordered for the Royal Navy as HMS Phaeton, the
cruiser was purchased by the Australian government and
renamed prior to her 1934 launch. This very special
print is made up of a historic archival photograph of a
number of the Sydney’s crew, the names of all 645
crewmembers and the coordinates of her final resting place.

In
1903 the Perth Rifle Volunteers were renamed the 11th
Australian Infantry Regiment. At this stage the only
permanent soldiers in Australia were Engineers, Coastal
Defence Gunners and a handful of Staff Officers. On the
outbreak of WWI, Australia had a militia of about 100 000
people. The Defence Act 1903 stipulated that the Australian
Militia Forces were only to be employed in the Defence of
Australia. Hence the Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) was
raised for service overseas.

versus England at the Antigua Recreational Ground at St.
John’s in Antigua, West Indian cricketer Brian Lara
passed the previous World Individual Test Record for runs
in an Innings, held at 380 by Australian, Matthew Hayden,
when he scored “400 Not Out”.
The Trinidadian left-hander faced 582 deliveries, hitting
43 fours and four sixes, setting a new mark just over two
