If there was a single innings that showcased the extent of Steve Waugh’s character, determination and talent, his knock against South Africa in the Super Six stage of the 1999 Cricket World Cup is a certain contender. Requiring a win to advance to the semi-finals of the prestigious tournament, Australia were in deep in trouble. In the 5th Ashes Test of the 2001 series, Steve Waugh displayed courage under fire in one of the gutsiest knocks ever. Showing obvious signs of discomfort early on in his knock, ‘Tugga’ was clearly suffering. His movement appeared severely restricted, affecting both his stroke play and running between wickets. In a trademark display of gritty determination, he showed no mercy to the already shell-shocked English attack.
